Machine Project
A showcase of musical numbers, vignettes and spells investigating women’s labor and the depiction of witches in popular tween and teen culture. This is an in-process showing of a new piece by creative partners Mireya Lucio and Sallie Merkel developed specifically for Machine Project’s Mystery Theater.
WE PUT A SPELL ON YOU is a sister piece to Lucio and Merkel’s recent devised performance Our So-Called Sleepover or Freud and Jung crash 1995 through a Ouija Board, which explores themes of “female hysteria” and the conditions of girlhood as circumscribed by psychoanalysis and reclaimed, challenged and explored in both foundational feminist texts and mid-90s popular culture.
