		<description>About MeI am an interdisciplinary artist, writer, director, and performer.
I was born &#38;amp; raised in Puerto Rico, then I lived in New York, and now I live in Los Angeles.


I practice art and magic, I cannot separate one from the other.
Performance is ritual and ritual is performance.
Arrangements of words and objects are spells.
Meaning making and disrupting are spells.
I believe in art and magic as tools for healing, preservation, revolution, connection, and liberation.I trained as an actor, singer, and physical performer (BFA Tisch/NYU; Moscow Art Theatre; MFA CalArts).
I invite amateur and do-it-yourself aesthetics to disturb established modes of theatrical performance, and&#38;nbsp;activate embodied research as ritual acts of decolonization/unsettling.
My practice engages a multi-referential and horizontal research sharing process, drawing on historical documentation, literature, user-generated online platforms, macro/micro cultural phenomena, and personal experience, in order to create events that consider American mythologies, exorcize cultural content, and subvert authoritative ways of accounting for truth.

I’ve created dinners, lectures, walking tours, videos, stage shows, and game nights. My full-length solo works unravel timelines embedded with precise historical reenactment into musical extravaganzas: Brandenburg Gate: The American Hits (PAM), and “¡Con la boca es un mamey!” (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions). 
My collaborative practice with Sallie Merkel, Emotional Labor Co., weaves popular culture and academic inquiry into non-linear, transgressive studies of girlhood, as in Our-So-Called Sleepover, or, Freud and Jung Crash 1995 Through a Ouija Board (LAX Festival), and creates transformative ritual via playful entertainment, as in The Commons (digital series) and the iterative Witches’ Cabaret (We Put a Spell on You! at Machine Project's Mystery Theater; Witch House at CalArts; Love Spells at Mast on Fig; and Casting into the Unknown, and The Graveyard Shift and Other Stories, both presented via livestream).

Witches’ Cabaret is an ongoing, devised performance project helmed by Mireya Lucio and Sallie Merkel (Emotional Labor Corp.). Each iteration of Witches Cabaret is unique and collaboratively generated by a coven of performers through a process-based, feminist ethos:

Our So-Called Sleepover, or, Freud and Jung Crash 1995 Through a Ouija Board, a semi-autobiographical theatrical performance of female hysteria, karaoke dreamscapes, cannon feminist texts and Seventeen Magazine advice columns, presented most recently at Automata as part of the LAX Festival (October 2015)
Borrowing text from My So-Called Life, Freud &#38;amp; Jung’s work, and prominent feminist writings, ‘Sleepover...’ dives into a twenty-year-old female-centric pop culture time capsule, where Mireya Lucio and Sallie Merkel reenact versions of their pre-teen selves in a sleepover that never actually happened.

What begins as a naturalistic recreation of pre-teen female bonding is quickly disrupted by a supernatural plot twist which sends the performance into hyper theatrical territory. Utilizing musical numbers, masks, heightened physicality, impressions, and a whole lot of mansplainig, the performers embody and challenge the ways in which the history of psychoanalysis continues to circumscribe girlhood.

"Sleepover..." is a theatrical essay/assemblage complete with a pizza delivery!

Possessed by the spirits of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, the friends must find their way through a psychoanalytical cat-fight while being caught at the intersection of MTV feminism and Lisa Frank style. Can karaoke dreamscapes and Seventeen Magazine advice help these two as they encounter the concept of "female hysteria?" Who are Freud and Jung, anyway? And will their legendary feud tear the girls apart?

Mireya Lucio performs an episodic timeline of US presidential visits and foreign celebrity presence in Berlin, along with renditions of number-one Billboard Chart hits of the day. Fact and reenactment are juxtaposed with pop metaphor and speculation in an act of historical tourism that is part lecture, part political assembly, and part rock concert.

Performed at PAM Residencies (September 2015) and as a visiting artist at Otis College of Art and Design (March 2016)
